Meet James...
James Eaves
Chartered Building Surveyor - Manchester
Working at Arcus —
I joined Arcus in 2003 to commence a 12 month placement as
an undergraduate whilst studying for my Degree in Building
Surveying at Liverpool John Moores University. As an
Assistant Building Surveyor I worked on Decent Homes
Schemes for Willow Park Housing Trust as well as other
smaller schemes that enable classroom taught methodology
to be put in to good practice. I formed strong bonds with
colleagues, clients and contractors during my year out and
built many important and lasting relationships.
When my year out ended, I returned to University to complete my final year and focused my dissertation on Decent Homes, greatly assisted by the experience and knowledge gained from Arcus. During my final year I remained in contact with my line manager and felt really supported during this time.
On achieving my degree in 2005, I returned to Arcus as a Graduate Building Surveyor. I immediately began adding to my knowledge and experience and was given the opportunity to work on a range of projects ranging in value from £100k up to £5m in contract value including refurbishment works to non-traditional properties, facelift and group repair schemes and stock transfers.
Soon after returning to Arcus I embarked upon the APC path and in November 2007 achieved Chartered status on my first attempt after just 3 years diary development. I feel this success was made achievable by following the Arcus structured training program that is made available to all graduate surveyors, having the opportunity to work on a varied portfolio of projects and as a result of the support I received from senior members of Arcus staff.
To ensure that my knowledge of regulations and products is kept up-to-date, I regularly attend office and practice CPD events arranged by Arcus. In house and external presentations are all essential to my continual professional development.
At the moment I am receiving management training and commercial awareness training to aid my development as a senior employee, in developing and strengthening my ability build relationships with clients. I also play an active part in health and safety issues as Health & Safety Co-ordinator for the Manchester office. As part of my development programme within this area I have attained the IOSH Managing Safely Certificate, CSCS accreditation and am about to commence training to gain accreditation as a member of the Association for Project Safety.
